Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)

In my experience, CFS is one of the most complex, multifactorial conditions to treat. It requires a close, supportive, and trusting relationship between client and medical practitioner. Diet, nutritional supplements, the correction of hormone imbalances, addressing sleep disorders, construction a gentle and supportive exercise program, stress reduction, alleviating chronic anxiety and depression, eliminating intestinal parasites and candida infections from the gut, and the use of more aggressive antiviral therapies when necessary, are all necessary and important treatments in trying to reverse this condition.

The most important factor to consider is finding a treatment provider who can help guide you through this process. Healing is a journey and emerging from the blackness of CFS can help make you a stronger and healthier individual during the rest of your life. I should know. I had chronic fatigue syndrome for five very long years before emerging from its pit into full recovery.

Chronic fatigue is often attributable to one or more of the following causes:

  1. Anemia
  2. Hormone Deficiencies
  3. Chronic Infections
  4. Nutritional Deficiencies
  5. Anxiety and Depression

Individuals with chronic fatigue often have several of the above factors contributing to their fatigue at the same time. By working through each of factors in a sequential fashion, one can identify the causative factors and begin constructing a comprehensive healing program to address them.

The longer chronic fatigue has been present, the longer it may take to reverse its effects and completely rebuild your health.

CFS cannot be diagnosed unless the fatigue has been present for at least the past six months and is not attributable to a clearly identifiable cause. The 1994 International Research Case Definition for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome states:

CFS is a syndrome characterized by fatigue that is:

  • medically unexplained
  • of new onset
  • of at least six months duration
  • not the result of ongoing exertion
  • not substantially relieved by rest
  • causes a substantial reduction in previous levels of occupational, educational, social, or personal activities
In addition, there must be four or more of the following symptoms:
  • impaired memory or concentration
  • sore throat
  • tender neck or armpit lymph nodes
  • muscle pain
  • headaches of a new type, pattern, or severity
  • unrefreshing sleep
  • multi-joint pain
  • post-exertional malaise (lasting more than 24 hours)
