Ask Dr. Kaiser

Question:

Dr. Kaiser, when you have a patient supplementing with
exogenous DHEA will there automatically be a decrease in endogenous production due to the negative feedback mechanism?

Dr. Kaiser replies:

In my experience, the goal of DHEA supplementation
(and for several other hormones as well) is to keep the serum level in the upper half of the normal range. This is important if a person requires more energy and vitality so that the healing process can move forward in a steady fashion.

It also appears to me that supplementing DHEA adds to the amount that is being endogenously produced as opposed to completely replacing endogenous production. I believe this to be the case because I have frequently observed that, after several months or years on DHEA and micronutrient supplementation, the adrenal glands can rest and recover sufficiently that endogenous production ramps up and the DHEA supplement can be decreased or eliminated completely. This becomes evident when the DHEA-sulfate level begins to steadily increase despite taking the same dosage of a DHEA.  I view this as a positive step in a person's healing.

I hope this explanation is sufficient and thanks for your excellent
question!
