Ask Dr. Kaiser Question: What is the average life span of a patient with AIDS?Dr. Kaiser replies: The answer to your question is directly related to the CD4 count of the patient. People with CD4 counts above 500 cells/mm3 have completely normal immune systems that will resist infection for a long period of time. If your viral load is high, and you are not treated with antiviral medication, the CD4 count will decline more quickly than if the viral load remains in the low range (less than 20,000). People who are HIV(+) with CD4 counts less than 200 cells/mm3 have a greater chance of developing life threatening infections, especially if their HIV infection remains untreated.
