Ask Dr. Kaiser

Question:

What is the average life span of a patient with AIDS?

Dr. Kaiser replies:

The answer to your question is directly related to the CD4 count of the patient. People with CD4 counts above 500 cells/mm3 have completely normal immune systems that will resist infection for a long period of time. If your viral load is high, and you are not treated with antiviral medication, the CD4 count will decline more quickly than if the viral load remains in the low range (less than 20,000).

People who are HIV(+) with CD4 counts less than 200 cells/mm3 have a greater chance of developing life threatening infections, especially if their HIV infection remains untreated.

However, given the large number of antiviral medications currently
available, coupled with the highly effective natural therapies that I
recommend to my patients, I believe very strongly that most of my patients will live long and completely healthy lifespans. It mostly depends on you. Making the best choices about when to start antiviral medications, taking them diligently, eating a healthy diet, regularly exercising, taking my vitamin program, and practicing a good program of stress reduction all make a difference! You can do it!
