Ask Dr. Kaiser Question: My partner and I have been HIV+ since the test came out in 84. We have been taking the Pearson formula all that time and have done fairly well, though tendon problems and mild neuropathy have increased lately and facial lipodystrophy and added belly fat have been a problem. We added in Juvenon (1000 mg Acetly-L-Carnitine & 400 mg Alpha Lipoic Acid) lately. Together this combination has most of what is in your K-PAX (except the NAC,a few minerals, and I can't compare the bioflavenoids). The point is that we can get this combination for about $35/month and $40/month for the Juvenon. Your formula would cost us $129/month each. We both have low incomes. Is there anything important missing in the formula we are now taking that would justify our increasing our monthly vitamin bill $50/each/per month to take your formula? I really liked your presentation at the SF GLBT Center last week and greatly appreciate the courageous work you are doing.You have always been an inspiration to us. Dr. Kaiser replies: Hi Carl and Jim: I have looked at the Pearson formula and it appears that there is far less Vitamin B6 and Calcium and it also appears that Magnesium is not present in it at all. They are crucial for proper nervous system function as well as for preventing peripheral neuropathy (which you mentioned was recently a problem). In addition, the Pearson formula is made with the addition of ascorbyl palmitate. This is wax that is mixed into the entire formula in order to lubricate the capsule presses to make them run faster and require cleaning less often. The problem with this is that the wax coats every nutrient particle into a waxy sphere that has a melting point of 160 degrees F. Your body temperature hopefully doesn't exceed 100 degrees F very often. Therefore, I believe that products using this lubricant have inferior absorption and therefore less potent effects. Finally, the only combination tested in a double blind, placebo-controlled fashion, and shown to significantly raise CD4 cells (by 26%) has been the K-PAX formulation.
