Ask Dr. Kaiser

Question:

Hello. I guess I was exposed to HIV in June of 2005, even though I did not get my results until this August. I do not feel ill at the present time. I did my first CD4 count and viral load test around October, 2005 with a CD4 326 and VL of 7810 copies (CD4 percentage 23.5). Then this November my CD4 count was 386 (percentage 24.3) and VL 5000.  What do these numbers mean? Do I need drugs now? I just started taking K-PAX Immune Support
Formula and I hope it will cause my CD4 count to rise.

What do I need to do? I am in Barbados. I am a desperate law student on a low budget? Could I live 30 years or more?

Please, I beg you respond. I check here everyday. I am so scared.

Dr. Kaiser replies:

Hello.  First, let me say that at your current CD4 count and viral load (386 cells and VL 5000 copies) it is safe for you to still avoid taking antiviral medication.  The current US guidelines state that the CD4 cell cut off is 350 cells before starting the drugs and I often allow my
patients to go down to 300 cells as long as they are following the immune supportive recommendations of my program.

However, your goal should be not just to slow your decline, but to raise your CD4 count from its current level up into the 400's utilizing an aggressive program of natural therapies.  I am pleased to hear that you have begun taking the K-PAX nutritional formula because, as long as you take the correct dose for your weight (8 capsules 2x/day if you weigh more than 120 pounds) it has been shown in a well done clinical trial to raise CD4 counts up to 25%.

Finally, you also need to implement the other important parts of my program which include: 1) making sure that you do not have intestinal parasites by testing once per year 2) keeping your hormone levels in the upper half of the normal range 3) getting regular exercise and adequate rest, and 4) getting optimal nutrition from your diet which includes adequate protein intake.

Information on the above points can be found throughout my website and I know that you will be pleased to hear that I am planning to release an updated version of my book "Healing HIV" in electronic audio format by the end of this year.  Finally, if you implement all of the above recommendations, whether you need to take antiviral meds or not, I believe that you can live a normal and healthy lifespan.  Do you believe this?  It is important that you do!

Now that you got a response to your question from me, I hope you see how important it is to 1) Be persistent 2) Keep the Faith 3) Keep Hope Alive!

Best regards,

Dr. Kaiser
